A flooded basement is something no one wants to deal with, and it can be hard to know where to begin. Whether it’s because of storms, a burst pipe, or a failed sump pump (explained in our post here) the outcome is largely the same: water everywhere. So what should you do as soon as you realize your basement is flooding?

Safety first

Nothing is more important than your safety and the safety of your family. Houses can be repaired, items can be replaced, but injuries cannot be undone. There are quite a few safety hazards that can come with flooding, so always proceed with caution, and when in doubt, wait for the experts.
Always make sure the electricity to your basement is shut off before you go down, and use a powerful LED flashlight for light to ensure you don’t trip or step on anything hazardous. If your water heater is located in the basement, you should also shut off your gas supply before venturing in.

Once you’re sure that the electricity is off and things are safe, unplug any appliances, including your sump pump. Nothing electrical should be operated in the wet basement until the water is cleared away.

Call your insurance

Your insurance agent will be able to give you a claim number for your case, as well as some next steps. They should be informed of everything that happens along the way, even if it seems small. Seemingly minor details can help them get you what you need, so write it all down.

Document everything with pictures if you can, and make sure to note when the flooding started, how it happened, and the degree of damage.

Bring in the experts

Basement flooding can be a complex issue, so don’t be afraid to call your city water supply to have them shut it off if the source of the water is coming from inside. You may also need to call gas services, electrical, or a licensed plumber or electrician.
